Hot Summer Bite

Report Date: August 23, 2016

Bait has come back to the beaches in a big way. As a result, the fish will follow. Snook, redfish, trout, lots of mangrove snapper are taking advantage of the bait schools too.
It has been a hot month so getting out early in the morning is a must. Bait has been sizzling on the points of mangrove islands throughout the Ten Thousand Islands and the south Marco Island areas. I have been primarily using live bait netted on the beach to catch fish. Snook and redfish have been staging on points and knock downs along mangrove banks. The mangrove snappers have been voracious as well. The morning hours on an incoming tide have worked the best for me. By noon it is almost too hot to handle. Late afternoon bites have been productive as well.
Trout have been biting on the grass flats. If you don't catch live bait, jigs tipped with a piece of shrimp will work just fine. Gulp shrimp on a jig or spoons are also a good option. The nook have been small to medium but we have been catching slot snook too.
Beta the summer heat by getting out early or plan an afternoon trip as it starts to cool down and fish until sunset. I'll see you on the water.
